The Effects of Hydrotherapy on the Brain and its Effectiveness on Children with Varying Levels of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Aishwarya Manga

Objective: The goal of this research is to test which areas of the brain hydrotherapy triggers and the behavioural changes linked to each area of the brain and functional connectivity in each of the functionalities of Autism spectrum Disorder.

Method: This research aims to determine which parts of the brain will receive blood flow, measured by rs-fMRI, which will be given prior to and following the hydrotherapy. Additionally, the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), a 23-item generic health status instrument will be provided before and after the hydrotherapy to measure changes in symptoms.

Results: The results predict that the least functioning individuals with Autistic Disorder will experience the greatest improvement and demonstrate the most changes in the brain, followed by Asperger’s Syndrome, and then Pervasive Developmental Disorder due to the more drastic neural changes.

Conclusion: By using more physical based studies, such as fMRI and taking into account the functionality, the research can narrow down the root causes of behavioural changes. Hydrotherapy has been used for individuals’ muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, spina bifida and should be extended to Autism Spectrum Disorder, as it is a natural, cheap, and effective way to alleviate symptoms.
